Title: Best purchase 2017?
Post by: up the cherries! on December 31, 2017, 06:45:08 PM
As 2017 draws to a close, what was the best purchase you made this year? Did anybody find that elusive card they needed to complete a set? Finally, what are your aims for 2018, collecting wise?

I didn't buy many cards this year as I was busy with other things.  Best purchase was a load of large metal cabinets to put my cards in and keep the mice out.

Probably been my best year for finding Ogdens cards for my collection. I had about 2100 cards needed and found over 300 cards in 2017.

never really hunt for any specific cards but always try to imagine which cards I will find and usually surprised. The down side of what I am looking for rarely come up individually, usually within others so have to buy many for a few. There has been one or two individual cards purchased, bought some really good ones in the CSGB auction, saw them at the convention.

Found quite a few unregistered Ogdens cards, which is most satisfying.

Been busy with my banking claim so not written much but did notice that item 97 in the TABS with full stop that there is at least 4 printings.

Over all a successful collecting year, hop to replicate.

I do also collect all things that came out of the Meccano factory which includes Hornby 'O' gauge, Hornby Dublo, Dinkys and of course Meccano itself. Coincidence that both my passions of collecting had their factories within a mile of each other.

Two series finally, finally, completed after disregarding so many poor copies!
King's Laundries - Radio and TV stars - Eric Barker
Reddish Maid - International Footballers - Bobby Moore

Unfortunately, a number of other sets stand out due to their 'incompleteness(?)'
Onward and upward!

Got the last card I needed in the Melbourne Cup Winners series. Also finally finished the Wills Kings and Queens.
Next task is the one card I need for the Water Girls series.

I had a few great buys at the convention (which I can't believe was only about 8 months ago!). David's help with the Ogden's Flags and Funnels varieties was a life saver and a Will's 'School Arms' card with the variant back stand out. I was also lucky to get the Will's 'Arms of the British Empire' proof card in a society auction showing 'Victoria' that was never issued :)

Another year of a great hobby and I hope everyone here has another great year of collecting ahead - who knows what we'll all find!

Thanks,
Sam

I was not quite as active in 2017 but still found myself trawling around bootsales and auction rooms.

I found a few things of interest but I also found large quantities of old Tat !   :)

Now some of you might recognise these two cards,I purchased a load of cards at auction,in the big box of Players Brooke bonds and 1930s Wills were approx 10 of the type on the right and about 7 of the type on the left.So far Ive failed to identify either type mainly due to the blank backs, but looking at them they look 1900 ish..anyone know what series they come from ?   http://cigarettecardcollecting.com/index.php?action=media;sa=item;in=577 (http://cigarettecardcollecting.com/index.php?action=media;sa=item;in=577)

You can never tell whats round the corner didn't expect much after my successes of 2017 but just found some unrecorded, well not strictly true as the cards were known in number to exist but nobody knew what the cards were.

I am of course referring to OGDEN'S cards, ENGLISH ACTRESSES, on the back of each card it states 10 cards produced, but only 6 were registered by name. Well I found and purchased No. 1 last November, making 7 seen known, can you believe it just found another 4 and 3 are the unknown subjects.

All ten subjects are now known.
