Title: WHAT DO I COLLECT
Post by: Ogdenscards on April 29, 2018, 02:13:10 PM
NOT BEEN MANY NEW TOPICS OF LATE SO THOUGHT OF THIS ONE FOR EACH PERSON TO GIVE A BREIF MENTION OF THEiR COLLECTION.

I THINK WHAT I COLLECT IS WELL KNOWN BUT IF NOT, ANYTHING THAT WAS ISSUED OR HAS A CONNECTION WITH THE OGDEN'S FACTORY.

If collectors start contributing then will place some photographs on of my recent purchases.

As for me Ogdens Guinea Golds and Tabs.
Started by just collecting one card of each number/type but after a visit to Ogdenscards saw the light and now collect all base variations.
If anyone has an interest in Guinea golds please pursue your interest because they are not as half complicated as they first seem and there is plenty of help on here for new collectors.

I collect mainly German cards due to having lived a long time in Germany where they were the easiest ones to obtain.  I suppose that being in France I now ought to try collecting French cards but I don't have any space left to keep them.

I collect pretty much anything and enjoy the chase of trying to find bargains in auctions, boot sales, and the like.

I'm not keen on spending top money on cards so its like Christmas if I find something  :)

I particularly like Radio related cards

Cricket Cards - Cigarette & Trade card production from the late 1870's/early 1880's until approx 100 years later after which the proliferation & sheer number of issues just becomes too much to manage with the same level of "completeness!" Its a fairly significant collection and resides in almost 30 albums (with page configurations of 20/16/12/9/4 & 2 pocket card sleeves). They are sorted chronologically (the best way I know) and along the journey I have added other collectible items - wrappers, boxes, badges, tins etc that also have a cricket theme, but mostly related to the card manufacturers...

The collection has representation of almost every recorded set known to be issued and some from others that haven't been! Its taken two decades of hard work, time & effort chasing down cards to complete sets. It represents a significant chunk of my time and money in the past 20 years, but still brings great satisfaction & interest to me every day.

Without pushing the "personal barrow" too far, I've been told by other Australian cricket cards collectors that it is one of the most significant collections in Australia, so it is comforting to know that others have an appreciation for what I've managed to put together. On top of the collection I have also developed a digital scan database of >30,000 cricket card images, which has helped me to identify rarities, errors and variations and that has also allowed me to grow the collection and identify unusual cards to acquire...

I still have a four page 'Wants List' and am always looking for cards to reduce it.

Thats a good response, sort of introduces each other to each other and potentially gives the examples of common collections hope this theme continues.

the main part of my collection centres on cigarette and trade cards featuring birds, feathers, eggs, nests etc. But I only look at cards issued pre-1970 as I don't find most bird cards issued after that date particularly attractive (just my opinion!).

I do collect anything I like though which I know lots of us do. With that in mind I collect pretty much all cards! I don't tend to go for cricket or sport themed sets but there are some early ones I have on the list. Wills Scissors Footballers, Wills Footballers and Flags etc - they are stunning cards. I also have a pretty large Pok?mon card collection which is always being added to.

I have around 150 sets on my wants list at present (excluding Pok?mon or types I always keep an eye out for). I am keen to get this down this year but its the same old story. For every set I cross off I'll have added another that I want to target...

Its interesting to see what collectors like, perhaps this may encourage other collectors to participate and contact like minded collectors.

I do like to see different collections and see how they are presented which educates what is out there.

This topic leads me to my next suggestion, but I think I will open a new topic to discuss, it involves the evening of the convention.

Mainly cricket, military and beauties, particularly the earlier issues, mainly tobacco but some trade. As Sam said above, if I like the card I will collect it.

Mainly cards I like but have a preference for cricket cards.
Sadly they are often fairly expensive.

The cricket cards are certainly a common theme, I take it you all have the cricketers in the Ogden's series, Tabs & Guinea Golds.

What if any cards in particular are you looking for? you never know one collector may have that elusive card.

The two Wills series of 1896 and 1901 I particularly like. When they are for sale they are usually above my budget though.

I collect pretty much anything, if the price is right for me. Like Ridgeback, I like the thrill of the hunt at car boots and the like, anywhere I do not have to pay top dollar really. My main interests are 'modern' trade ( including the dreaded word 'stickers' ), real photographic cards ( beauties, views etc - quality images at a fraction of the cost of postcards - ), Sanitarium, and finally, Leibigs. Quite an assortment, really. My wife would prefer for me to just concentrate on one area or theme, but it is not going to happen!

Just to be varied, when Pokomon cards came out I collected them with my two sons, who at the time were annoyed at me placing them in sleeves not allowing them to play with the cards. Now they show them off to their friends now they are in their twenties.

any way went to a car boot at the weekend and bought a load of Pokemon cards

Which sets David?

Title: Re: WHAT DO I COLLECT
Post by: Ogdenscards on May 10, 2018, 08:15:54 AM
There were no sets but just random cards the sets represented were
16 cards with Japanese writing 'Pocket Monsters' on the backs.
5 different cards out of 62
11 out of 130
34 out of 82
31 out of ?? but called TV animation edition are they Topps cards
1 out of 10  again but seems different TV edition
15 out of 132

these are the different cards but  many duplicates probably a few hundred, but all in excellent condition.
If I see them at the car boots intend to buy them if the right price, oh and they came in Pokemon tin.

PS sam forgot to see that sheet you had at the convention, might come over to the club one day or Pudsey but keep forgetting when its on.

David,

Sorry I didn't respond earlier (been on holiday) and yes I am pleased when something unusual turns up, though the Want's List still has a few supposedly 'common' cards on it! Its great when any card I get is from pre WW1, which accounts for about 1.5 pages of the list (4 pages), but English Cigarette cards (there are very few English Trade cards in the era) are particularly hard to come by in Australia. I've got just about every English issue covered by at least one Type card, but am always looking to add to them to get closer to complete the sets. Some are a work in progress and some (sadly) may never be completed!

The cricket issues from 1895 Marcus Cigarettes (1/15?), 1897 C & W Heroes of Sport (7/19), 1899 Kinnear Cigarettes (11/15), 1902 D & J McDonald (2/25) & 1902 Smith's Champions of Sport (12/29) hardly ever turn up so they cant be too common, even in the UK! There are also some very rare Australian issues from the era that are very scarce here and on the odd occasion when one turns up (from either country), and I can acquire it it does make the search worthwhile.

Even in your field of collecting, some of the early Ogden's are very hard to find - 1899 Cricketers & Sports (39/50 - 28/36 cricket subjects), 1899 Base 'M' Wide Space (47/50), Close Space (12/27) - though I do have all the other Ogden's GG & TAB cricket issues except the two Ranji Cards (Medium & Large) and the W.G. Grace (Veteran Cricketer) card, so if you ever come across any spares of these would be happy to consider!

Cheers

Yes - I would be happy to grab the other two which are in better condition than the two I have - I would have loved the Trumble card as well which is one I don't have so if its an upgrade for you I'd be happy to negotiate on your old one as well

Not sure what they are worth but you can email me at sjflemm62@yahoo.com.au and I'll entertain the offer

Cheers,

Steve F.

No I do not have 'Trumble' myself but if I find one will let you know.
