I do enjoy looking for cards at the convention but am very conscious that me and many other collectors heads are usually down among the files, but I do enjoy talking to other collectors and seeing there collections and learning of there knowledge but find little time to do just that.

I would really enjoy an evening of presentations, just two or three talks on their chosen collection along with them beinging examples for us to see and discuss. It need not be formal i.e. bookings but maybe a room set aside at a hotel with drinks and food ordered at will. People can introduce themselves and their theme of collecting

There are many a very knowledgeable collectors out there itching to share their collections and find like minded collectors of the same themes.

All is needed is some sort of selected venue with the suggested speakers and collections, am sure at first maybe only half a dozen collectors but with good effort this could grow and make the weekend about cards not just the fair.

What are your thoughts?

I'd be nervous that the uptake to give a talk would be low tbh but I am happy to be corrected. I think people would be up for a few beers with fellow collectors though.

I'd be more than happy to present on Pok?mon or Birds though to start but there are areas I'd love to see presented (unless it was something really specialist like GG's/Tabs or Wills Transvaal etc!). I do think that getting people together can only ever be a good thing. I used to love the Saturday night as there would be large groups having dinner together.

Another thing to think on is who would fund that room in the hotel. Do you think people should chip in as a group?

Hi all,
I think this is a very interesting topic, but I do have mixed feelings about it. Whilst I would welcome the opportunity to expand my knowledge of cards, I do not think it would be appreciated by my wife, who has very little interest in the hobby. We treat weekends like the convention as a mini break, and like to go out in the evening for a meal somewhere, sometimes with other members of the club or dealers. I think if I were to turn the weekend into something purely about cards, she would be reluctant to attend, and as we do most things together this would impact on my enjoyment of the event.
As a side issue, the best conventions (in our opinion, and shared by others that I know), have been those that were held within walking distance of town centres / shopping areas that perhaps partners can go and do their own thing whilst we peruse cards at our leisure. Stratford was a great example of this.

I was thinking more of an informal room that does not charge pubs sometimes will set aside a n area or room if they think punts will be coming. Just would like to expand the weekend to meeting like mind people and enjoy there knowledge. I have used the word talk or presentation, and perhaps to formal but examples of collectors collections to be discussed, even perhaps just their Saturday purchases and peoples wants list.

The point I am making is that we card collectors travel a good distance put our heads down and then drive back missing out on enjoyable discussions.

Am pleased that a few possible ideas may come from this topic.
