New Joiner

Hi all,

New member joining the fun.

Got into this hobby as a child when my Grandfather gave me a large carrier bag full of cigarette cards (both grandparents were 40-a-day smokers) and said ''sort that lot out'' - and I never put them down!
I have refined, sold, traded and bought my way to a quite refined, yet small collection.
I only have 15 complete sets but nearly another 80 incomplete ones, which I intend to sell on in time to fund the completion of my JPS 'War Decorations and Medals' set.

I have a tendency to lean toward military type cards (I'm ex-navy) with a preference for photographic sets, my favorites being Churchman's 'The Navy at Work' set and Pattreiouex's 'The Navy'.
My oldest is the JPS 'Ships Figureheads'

I am hoping to glean some more information from the site and maybe get some pointers.

Hi Craig,

It's always nice to see other collectors coming on and getting involved. Everyone is friendly on this site so I am sure you'll get help with any questions you may have about all things cards.

As for the small sized Ships Figureheads - it's a great set. One thing you may be interested to know (if you already do just tell me to go away!) - you can get the numerals on the backs with serif and without so you can split the set into two if you're so inclined. There's also the large sized which are great. I'd really recommend eBay for them as I got a full large set for about £7 a few weeks ago which is a bargain I think.

If you're short of any Pattreiouex cards please just PM me, I have a few hundred spares and I'm happy to send a few odds over if I have them at no cost.

Always interested in buying rare bird cards and general reference material (books, magazines etc.)

Welcome to the forum Craig.
What never fails to impress me is the varied and often specialist knowledge that resides around here. Never be reticent about asking questions either. An answer is usually forthcoming.

Thanks for the welcome people!

Especially to Sam - who has inadvertently thrown a spanner in my proverbial works by mentioning Serifs on the numbers.
And there being a large set!  I will be dragging out the set I have to see if I have parts of 2 different sets now! :o

Joking aside, I have had a good trawl through the forum and can see there is a lot of knowledge herein, however, I hope not to burn your ears too much with questions!

Hi Craig and welcome to the forum.  I'm sure the members will be able to help you with a lot of information.  There are quite a few German military sets around, esp military uniforms.  If you like photographic military sets there's Die deutsche Wehrmacht among others.

I will say welcome as well and hope you will post many questions as often posts can lead in some direction not expected.

Have 1000's of Pattreiouex's duplicates if you are interested.

Always good to go to the convention at the end of April, would think you would find what you are looking for there, and also cards you did not know existed.

If you have trawled though the forum you may have released I have a leaning towards the cards issued by Ogden'
Always looking for interesting cards and associated goods issued by Ogden's you can see samples of cards I am looking for in the wants section.
Best Regards David
