Can anyone identify this ?
« on: February 24, 2018, 07:51:07 PM »
I went to Broadclyst card fair today, its more of a postcard fair really but I went to see if anyone could identify a couple of cards.

Anyway only 3 cigarette card dealers, lots of nice cards that I couldn't afford ,plus plenty that I had never seen before.
Bill Whelan identified one of my mystery cards, and he recognised this one but couldn't remember which set it came from, does anyone on here know ? Ive got 10 of them and they all feature Chinese Pagodas, the rears are blank.

Thanks for the pointer, yes the fronts look very similar,if I could just find who issued the ones with blank backs it would be great.

Still, its all part of the fun and I quite enjoy the chase, you never stop learning.

My gut feel was BAT to be honest but I couldn't find anything in the World Index (even I the Z section). I'll have a dig later on and see if I can find anything. I know Murai did a set (which Iansammel has linked to) and Will's issued a postcard sized set with Pirate cigarettes that are lovely cards. Failing that I'd suggest emailing Martin at research@card-world.co.uk. I am sure he'll know without having to look it up!

Dennis Owyang is the expert.  He produces reference books for Chinese issues.  I don't know where you could buy one but they should be available in the CSGB library if all else fails.

I spoke with Martin earlier and he's confirmed they are BAT and are listed in the Will's book (item 366). 'Chinese Pagodas' (adopted title) issued 1911 - set of 25. There are the postcard size Will's Pirate cards, the Murai examples and the plain backs are BAT.

Hope that helps!
Sam

Thanks for that,I cant imagine I will ever complete the set,the cards look pretty expensive, but I will stick that list in the album just in case I get lucky again.

I need the Emperor of Germany and Sir Robert Hart. I'm sure they will turn up someday, maybe at the Convention in 2 weeks time!
