Unknown chinese cards - help to identify
« on: August 13, 2018, 11:34:18 AM »
Hi,
I recently acquired a number of these cards numbering from 10-110. They are 67x37mm in size, in colour, with white border & a black frame line. All cards seen are printed in landscape format and numbered in top left or right corner.

Rear is in Chinese and format appears to be same or similar to Chinese grouping B for figure 530/16 at page 203 of Tobacco War & BAT booklets 1978 edition. No BAT characters appear to be present.

However series 530/16 is said to number 90 cards whereas I have up to no 110. This then leads me to series 530/17 which has 110 cards and is entitled Westward Trip, which could explain the monkeys on a lot of the cards (Monkey King - Journey to the West),  but the back is different.

Maybe it isn't BAT but I am no expert on these cards. Can anyone assists in identifying them please.

Hi,

I have to admit I asked a friend that specialises in Chinese issues on this one as they are such a challenge to research!

The cards are from the series of 120 known as ''The Westward Trip'', better known as ''Journey to the West'' or ''The Monkey King'' (Fig ZE4-57 in WTI II). The panel on the back of the cards reads B.A.T (Hong Kong) Ltd. (apparently the BAT panel should always be on the left of the text). You can also find it with gilt borders with or without the BAT panel.

Hope that helps anyway,

Regards,
Sam
