Hello!
« on: April 29, 2013, 09:33:26 AM »

Newbie here………

Well, as my pseudonym would imply – I cannot throw anything away! Much to my wife’s dismay……. ;D

I was given a number of cigarette card albums some 60 odd years ago (yes, I’m an old git  >:() and that sowed the seed for a lifetime fascination with ephemera and trying to “get a set” of whatever it maybe, and all of which I still have, although I seemed to have lost my collection of cheese labels (!?) which I used to save from the cheese triangles that became very popular during the 1950s. Cest la vie.  :-\

I then went on to primarily matchboxes and then concentrated on book matches, which I found more colourful and diverse. In the mid-60s I was given some WWII newspapers, which set me off yet again – amassing some 4,000 going back to the mid-17th century.
So, basically if it is ephemeral – I’ve got it/them somewhere!  8)

Recently, through work, I met an avid cigarette card collector and I have to say I was absolutely knocked out by the range of cards that he had and was still collecting. I never realised that there were so many! Absolutely amazing!! I showed him my albums, which I thought were highly collectable (!) Ooops, how wrong I was, as mine were quite common and apparently a true collector would only have loose sets in proper storage albums (?)
Anyway, that started me off yet again, and am now buying albums, which I prefer – love the art work on them and for me, keeps them all neat and tidy.

So am now going to explore the site and hope to get posting soon. (On Friday I had a throat operation so am still a bit groggy at the moment)

Thank you dant melys.

Yup, have a lot to look at - cannot wait! And, yes, if I can advise anyone on my more specialist subject (newspapers and magazines), I would be very happy to pass on any knowledge I can.

been there, seen it done it  !,
you sound very much like i have been, in your collecting, from matchbox llabels in the past, stamps, coins cards, cap badges, medals, books etc, etc, etc,.
you mention cheese labels, or as they like to call themselves, fromologists.
i have been purchasing childrens comics from the early fifties, that had trade cards in them, and the latest magazine i purchased , there was an advert on the back page, advertising cheese labels , and with a SAE, you could send of and receive a small packet of cheese label free, in return.
never ever seem to hear much about cheese labels now days, but i know that a while back, i was browsing a internet site about the hobby.
though not collecting them myself, just find it interesting in seeing what other people collect.
i always have an admiration for people that puts together a collection items that other people do not consider collectable.
about fifteen years ago, i began collecting fruit labels, that could be found on applles, bananas, and other fruits, and managed to make a collection of several hundred, although i seemed to have lost track of it at the moment, and stacked away in my attic somewhere.
other than that, hope you find this forum of great use, and like to hear of the cards and albums you collect.
you'll probably get lots of help here.

Thank you fossil - yes, it is an addiction.

Funnily enough I was saving fruit labels but not seriously - I have a towel dispenser and a tissue dispenser in my workshop that are covered in the things..........and then, I varnished it all. People come from far and wide to admire my dispensers!  ;D

Oh dear, what haven't I saved. All the usual "standard" ones of course, but also tin labels when I used to work for Heinz, bottle labels when I did some part-time work at a brewery when I was a student. old bills, old receipts, sugar wrappers from when I went to Russia once........it goes on and on.  :o

Fromologists eh? Well, there you go another new word I have learnt.

Collectors of newspapers, of which I am a big collector of, are called Journiologists.

wolfie, sometimes i just have to force myself to drink the contents, in the interests of my collecting the beer bottle labels, just punishment, sheer punishment and torture.
i than have myself a little glass of drambuie afterwards, to get rid of the taste

Hello and welcome, you seem to be fitting in fine and have a vast varied collection to talk about.
Do you have any interest in cards issued by Ogden's?
Haven't looked to see if you have placed your name on the members map yet, if not please do.

Met brid again yesterday he came round for a jolly, he certainly does know about these modern cards, he guided me around many sites that discuss these very cards. He looked at some of mine nice but only run of the mill.
Always looking for interesting cards and associated goods issued by Ogden's you can see samples of cards I am looking for in the wants section.
Best Regards David

Thank you for your welcome Ogdenscards - I am a lapsed collector and mostly have sets I was given as a child, all of which I have now found out are quite common, so cannot help you with Ogdens.

Let me think about the map - am not sure at present, but thank you.
